NVQ Level 2

Gates MacBain Associates deliver NVQ level 2 in Construction Skills, Heritage and Highways. Details of the Highways Maintenance NVQ are shown below though information on any other qualification can be obtained by contacting Gates MacBain Associates.



NVQ 2 Highways Maintenance – Excavation Operations 

This course is designed to provide a competence based qualification for those engaged within the highways maintenance sector.  The successful completion of the programme enables candidates to take the Highways Maintenance Operatives CSCS Health and Safety Test and if successful, qualify for a Blue CSCS Card. 

 

Assessment

To achieve the NVQ Qualification, the Candidate must complete all of the mandatory units plus 1 of the optional units.

Competence is assessed by ongoing assessments against the NVQ Standards for the following units:

Mandatory

  • Conform to General Workplace Safety
  • Conform to Efficient Work Practices
  • Locate and Protect Utilities Apparatus and Sub-structures
  • Excavate Holes and Trenches
  • Reinstate Excavation and Highway Surfaces

Optional

  •  Establish Work Area Protection and Safety
  • Segregate the Area for Highways Works

Provision of Assessment

Candidates will be allocated an assessor who acts as a mentor and guide throughout the programme.  The programme will include an induction day which relates to the overall course and provides guidance on how the NVQ is formulated and presented.  In addition candidates will attend for briefing and assessment sessions for each of the units.

Site visits by the Assessor also will be required during the period of the programme.

 

Duration

It is normal for Candidates to complete the programme in approximately 12 months, although it is possible to do so in a shorter period.
