The successful completion of the NVQ 6 programme in Construction Site Management enables candidates to take the Supervisor and Manager CSCS Health and Safety test and if successful, qualify for a Black CSCS Card. Candidates would also be eligible to apply for the appropriate grade of membership of the CIOB, IHE, ABE and other professional institutes.
Options
The NVQ route selected will be dependent upon the candidate’s working discipline, the options are:

- Highways Maintenance and Repair
- Residential Development
- Conservation
Eligibility
This NVQ is designed for site managers within the Building and Civil Engineering industry who are responsible for a site or an aspect of a large site.
Assessment
Competence is assessed by ongoing assessments against the NVQ standards relating to specific areas of management, which include:
- Planning
- Health, Safety & Welfare
- Implementing
- Organising, monitoring and control
- Teams and individuals
- Working relationships
- Development of self and others
- Physical resource management
Candidates must prove competence in 18, 19 or 20 units, dependent on the NVQ they are following.
Provision of Assessment
Candidates will be allocated an assessor who acts as mentor and guide throughout the programme. The programme will include an induction day which relates to the overall course and provides guidance on how the NVQ is formulated and presented. In addition candidates will attend for briefing and assessment for each of the units at Gates MacBain offices.
One or two site visits by the assessor will also be required during the period of the programme.
Optional Training
There is the option for additional training days at £65 per day relating to:
- Communication
- Working with people
- Managing people
- Site organisation
- Construction planning
- Resource management
- Management of subcontractors
- Management of quality
Duration
It is normal for candidates to complete the programme in approximately 15 months, although it is possible to do so in a shorter period. Extensions can be negotiated, although this will incur an additional fee of £40 per hour for any additional assessment time.
Fees
Programme fees of £2250 includes NVQ registration, mentoring, briefing meetings and assessment. The fee includes mileage for site visits up to 40 miles from Gates MacBain’s premises, any mileage greater than this will incur a charge of 40p per mile. In the event of the assessor needing to arrange overnight accommodation, these will be payable; any costs for this will be agreed prior to the visit.
Grants for this programme may be payable from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
